Forced Connection (5)

I have this kind of product at my house in which the bed is combined with drawer at the bottom. By using this kind of design, I think everything will be more effective, for example when I need to take my stuffs, I don't necessarily stand up, I just need to pull out the drawer below the bed. Additionally, it is space-saving.

sorry for bad quality of the picture.

Forced Connection (4)

I remember when I was a kid, I actually saw an interesting design in my cousin's house in which the object combines stair step and book shelf. Since I don't have the picture, I draw it instead.
Of course, the benefit of this product is to save space. Beside, it will be more organised because it is separated by each step.

Forced Connection (1)

Forced Connection is basically combining two different and also unrelated things together to produce a product.
For example there is a product called Leco. It is actually a combination of lego and bin. Beside its function as a bin, it also can be stacked, which means it can save some spaces.

Lateral Thinking (7)

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night. When you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus;
1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
2. An old friend who once saved your life.
3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Knowing that there can only be one passenger in your car, whom would you choose?

Of course the old lady! After helping the old lady into the car, you can give your car key to your friend, and wait with your perfect parter for the bus.

Lateral Thinking (6)

Three of the glasses below are filled with orange juice and the other three are empty. By moving only one glass, can you arrange the glasses so that the full and empty glasses alternate?

Lateral Thinking (5)

Here is another lateral thinking puzzle :

Eric lives on the eleventh floor of a building. Everyday Eric takes the elevator to the ground floor to go to work. When he returns, he takes elevator to the eighth floor then proceeds to walks up the stairs the remaining three floors.

The question is : Why does he take the elevator all the way down, but always get out on the eight floor on the way up?

because Eric is a dwarf, that's why he can only press the button of ground floor but not tall enough to press the button of eleventh floor.

Lateral Thinking (3)

Before you scroll down, how will you arrange these two triangles into four triangles?

Think harder!

Here is the answer : move down the white stick so it will become a number "4".

Lateral Thinking (2)

People with rational thinking will answer 5, while people with lateral thinking will answer differently. You might think this is funny because the "x" is literally there.
I bet you will not answer the answer in this picture for the real mathematic exam!

Lateral Thinking (1)

Lateral thinking is a thinking far away from logical or rational thinking, or you might say it's a thinking outside the box. As an example, someone is asked; 1 + 1 = ?

Commonly people will answer 2, because it is rational, whereby a person with lateral thinking would answer a window. How can it be a window?

Let's see, with 1+1 (red colour) and = (green colour), it will be a window.

Mind mapping (7)

So at last, this is a mind map done by my group. We were trying to figure out a word "sweet". It could be linked with cravings, ingredients, gesture, animals, or expressions, and then we started branching them out.

Mind mapping (6)

Mind maps are usually done by using words, but this one is done by only illustrations which make this mind map looks simple and effective. It's done by Paul Foreman. Visit here for more.
This is also one of funny mind map drawings by Paul Foreman; click here for more funny drawings.

Mind mapping (5)

This mind map was done by Paul Foreman, in which I find it quite interesting. Beside the colours of the mind map that catch attentions, the way he arranged the contents is really nice. Apparently, some people will just skip pages about a medical article, because it is full of words, and it is difficult to understand with such terms. So I think this might at least let us take a glance, or maybe read it and even observe it.

Mind mapping (4)

From this picture, we can use mind map method to categorise these things. First, of course, we can categorise them into fruits and vegetables. Second, we can also categorise them into colours; whether it is red, orange, yellow, green, or violet. Lastly, we can also categorise them from their shapes; round, long, etc.

Mind mapping (3)

This is a simple illustration of how mind map works; it is when you go to a book store and there are lots of books. Of course you can not find a certain book easily if they are all being put all together without being categorised. That is why they are all being put in different categories to become more specific so that you can find a book practically and easily.

Mind mapping (2)

There are many advantages of mind map as it works like our neural pathways. Beside easy to do, it is interactive, clear, and practical. It is also visually driven, which means it is a good tool to present your ideas, you don't need to describe in long words, just show them! I believe it will be more interesting and fun.

Mind mapping (1)

Basic ways to mind map :
First, you need to draw a central image which represents a topic you are going to explore. Draw at least four general ideas out of the central image, then draw another branches out of those four general ideas to more specific ideas and so on until the most specific idea in which you can not branch it out anymore.

101 ways to paint (7)

Paint by using thread.

Some people believe that materials that can not be blended will create a mosaic effect. But believe it or not, this amazing painting in which the colours are all blend altogether is made using thread as the medium, needle as a paintbrush, and the sewing machine as an extension of arm, by Cindy Hickok.

101 ways to paint (6)

Paint by using the artist's vomit.

Millie Brown, an artist who paints using her vomit, start from drinking the paint, poking into her throat, then vomit it to a canvas. I know it is gross, but it is still art anyway.

101 ways to paint (5)

Paint by using human ashes.

By blending the human ashes with acrylic paint, Val Thompson creates a beautiful textures in her paintings. These paintings also resemble people who wish to be remembered by their love ones.

101 ways to paint (4)

Paint by using dead butterfly wings.

By using wings only from dead butterflies that naturally died and also with his fascinating technique, this Russian Artist, Vadim Zaritsky has been painting in various sizes and themes; landscape, portrait, and even objects.
"A butterfly lives for just a few weeks, while my pictures give people a chance to admire it for many years," He said.

Paint by using dead ants.

This is an ant-painting by Chris Trueman. It is made of 200,000 dead ants and coated with a painting resin. It is a bit sadistic, but at least those ants did not die in vain.

Here is the details of the painting;

101 ways to paint (2)

Paint by using tongue.

This is an Indian artist, Ani K who paints using his tongue. It is actually a bit gross to me. But it is really a talent that he can paint with tongue. He got this inspiration from an artist who paints with her leg.

101 ways to paint (1)

Paint by using severed hand.

I think this is a really interesting way to paint. This is a Norwegian artist, Morten Viskum, who, instead of using his own hand to dip into paint and paint, he uses a corpse's hand to do his painting.

Breaking the rules (7)

I believe when you imagine the shape of a heel, this kind of heel will not pass through your mind. This heel is called "Heel-less" heel.
Some people think in 2011 it's a new innovation of shoes. But in fact back in 15th until 17th century, this kind of shoes were popularly worn by courtesans and patrician women to protect their shoes and dress from mud. It's called "Chopine" back then.

Breaking the rules (6)

As long as you can drink from it, it is still a cup, no matter how it looks like; whether it is round shape or irregular shape like the picture above.

Breaking the Rules (5)

Some people assume that a building should be in a symmetrical shape, or maybe a straight and tall tower. But not to Frank Gehry, an architect who is famous for his bold, postmodern shapes and unusual fabrications.

Week 2 Homework - Breaking the Rules

Q1 = What are some of your habits?
Sometimes when I have opinions or ideas about something, I tend to keep silent because I think it will be embarrassing if I speak out something odd,  that people will not understand my thoughts.

Q2 = How would you break them?
I think I will try to be more interactive, for example in class I will try to speak out when the lecturer ask for what the class think about a particular thing.

Q3 = Artists and Designers who broke the rules :

  • Christian Muller Architects and SeARCH - building house inside a hill.

 • Dalton Ghetti - doing sculpture on the tip of a pencil

• Millie Brown - paint by vomiting

• Leanie van der Vyer - unusual shape of the shoes, heel in front of the shoes.
